About AHT Electrical
Who we are, what we are approved to do, and where we work.
-
Who are AHT Electrical Ltd?
We are an electrical contractor based in Wellingborough, working across Northamptonshire and the surrounding areas. We have been in the trade for more than 35 years and cover domestic, commercial and industrial work — everything from a single socket in a house to three-phase power on a production line.
-
Are you NICEIC approved?
Yes, and in both categories that matter. We are an NICEIC Approved Contractor, which covers our commercial and industrial installation work, and an NICEIC Domestic Installer, which covers work in homes. Both involve being independently assessed on the work we actually carry out, not just paying a subscription.
-
Are you Part P registered?
Yes. Part P covers electrical safety in dwellings, and certain work in homes is notifiable under the Building Regulations. Being registered means we can certify and register that work ourselves, so you get the paperwork a buyer, solicitor or insurer will ask for later.
-
What qualifications do you hold?
We hold the City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Advanced Diploma in Electrical Installation, the City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the Periodic Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations, In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (PAT), Approving Electrical Installation Work in Dwellings in Compliance with Building Regulations, Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS 7671) and The Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations.
-
Are you insured?
Yes, fully insured on every job regardless of size. We are also SafeContractor accredited, which is an independent assessment of our health and safety arrangements, and we supply risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) whenever they are required.
-
Which areas do you cover?
We are based in Wellingborough and cover Northamptonshire and the surrounding areas. If you are not sure whether you fall within our patch, call us on 01933 674 191 — it is a quicker answer than guessing.
-
What does "18th Edition" actually mean?
BS 7671 is the British Standard for electrical installations, and the 18th Edition is its current version. All of our work is designed, installed and tested to it, which is what the certificate you receive at the end is confirming.
Getting started
Quotes, pricing and booking
What it costs, how to get a price, and when we can be on site.
-
Do you charge for quotes?
No. Quotes are free and carry no obligation. Tell us what you need using the quote form, over the phone or on WhatsApp, and we will come back to you with a clear price and a straight answer about what the job actually involves.
-
How much will my electrical work cost?
Every property and every job is different, so we price each one individually rather than publishing a standard rate that would be wrong for most people. What drives the price is the scope, the access and the state of the existing installation — all things we establish before quoting.
-
How do I get a quote?
Whichever way suits you. Use the quote form on any page, call the office on 01933 674 191, message 07968 914685 on WhatsApp — photographs of the problem often help — or email info@ahtelectrical.co.uk.
-
What are your opening hours?
Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am – 6pm. Outside those hours our emergency line is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, for genuine electrical emergencies.
-
Can you work evenings or weekends?
Yes, and for a lot of commercial work that is the sensible way to do it. Shop and office work is usually planned around trading, and industrial work around shutdowns and weekends. Tell us how the job needs to be sequenced and we will quote it that way.
-
Is any job too small?
No. A single socket, a failed light fitting or a fault that needs tracing is normal work for us, and it gets the same treatment as a full installation — tested, certified and left tidy.
-
How long will my job take?
It depends entirely on the scope and what we find once work starts, so we will not give you a figure before we have looked. What we will do is tell you honestly what is involved and how we would sequence it, so you can plan around it.
For homeowners
Work in your home
Rewires, fuse boards, faults, EV charging and the things that go wrong in houses.
-
Do I need a full rewire, or just part of one?
That is what an inspection tells you. Plenty of properties only need certain circuits replacing and the consumer unit upgrading, rather than the whole house pulling apart. We will tell you straight which it is rather than selling you the bigger job.
-
My breaker keeps tripping — can I just reset it?
Resetting it once is reasonable. Resetting it repeatedly is not — protection operates because something has caused it to, and a circuit that keeps tripping has a fault that needs tracing. If it will not stay on, leave it off and call us.
-
Do I get a certificate for work in my home?
Yes. Every job is tested and certified on completion and the certificate is handed over when we finish. Notifiable work is registered under Part P as well. Keep the paperwork safe — it is what a buyer, solicitor or insurer will ask for later.
-
Can you install an EV charging point at my house?
Yes. We are OZEV registered for electric vehicle charge point installation. We check the incoming supply, the earthing arrangement and the consumer unit first, then recommend the right charger and the best position for where you actually park.
-
Why does my bathroom still get damp when there is a fan fitted?
Usually because the fan is undersized for the room, badly sited, not running long enough after use, or ducted into the loft rather than outside. Those are the things we check before recommending a replacement — fitting a bigger fan badly does not fix it.
-
Will you make a mess?
Some electrical work means lifting floors or chasing walls, and we will tell you up front when it does. What we will not do is leave it like that — we work tidily, clear up as we go and leave the place as we found it.
-
Can you work on a property I am buying or selling?
Yes. An EICR before you buy tells you what you are taking on, and having certificates in order before you sell removes a common sticking point in conveyancing. We carry out both the inspection and any remedial work it identifies.
For businesses
Commercial and industrial work
Fit-outs, three-phase power, site paperwork and planned maintenance.
-
Can you work around our opening hours?
Yes. Most commercial work we do is planned around trading — evenings, early mornings, or phased across several visits so the premises can stay open. A shop with the lights off is a shop that is not taking money, and we plan on that basis.
-
Can you supply risk assessments and method statements?
Yes. We are SafeContractor accredited and supply RAMS whenever they are required, which is usually the case for managed premises, landlord-controlled sites and anywhere with a site induction.
-
Do you offer maintenance or service contracts?
Yes. We hold service contracts with local shopping centres and other commercial premises, covering planned maintenance and testing of lighting, power and emergency systems. What a contract covers is built around the site rather than sold as a fixed package.
-
Do you carry out three-phase and machine power work?
Yes. Three-phase distribution, sub-mains, isolators and final connections for plant are a core part of our industrial work, from the incoming supply through to the terminal on the machine.
-
Can work be done during a shutdown?
Yes, and on most industrial sites that is how it should be done. Tell us when the site can be down — a shutdown period, a weekend, a phased changeover — and we will sequence the job around it to keep lost production to a minimum.
-
Can you power a new machine we are having delivered?
Yes. Send us the machine’s electrical data — supply, load and connection details — and we will design the supply, isolation and protection around it, then make the final connection when it arrives.
-
Do you work with managing agents and landlords?
Yes. A good deal of our commercial work is for managed premises, where the paperwork matters as much as the installation. Certificates, test records and RAMS are supplied as a matter of course.
Testing & compliance
Certificates, EICRs and testing
What the law asks for, what the standards recommend, and what you get from us.
-
What is an EICR?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report is an inspection and test of the fixed wiring in a property — the circuits, the board, the earthing and bonding. It reports on anything that is unsafe, deteriorating or no longer up to current standards, with each observation given a code for severity.
-
Do landlords have to have an EICR?
Landlords of rented homes in England are required to have the electrical installation inspected and tested at least every five years, and to provide a copy of the report to their tenants. We carry out those inspections, supply the report, and can put right anything it identifies.
-
What do the codes on an EICR mean?
Broadly: danger present, potentially dangerous, improvement recommended, and further investigation required. The first two mean the report is unsatisfactory and the items need addressing. We explain what each observation on your report actually means for the property rather than handing you a list of codes.
-
How often should emergency lighting be tested?
BS 5266, the recognised standard for emergency lighting, sets out regular short function tests plus a full-duration test annually, with the results recorded. We carry out that testing and keep the records, either as a one-off or under a service contract.
-
How often does PAT testing need doing?
There is no single fixed interval in law. The requirement is to maintain equipment in a safe condition, and a sensible testing frequency depends on the type of equipment and how hard it is used — a site transformer and an office printer are not the same risk. We will give you a straight recommendation for your equipment.
-
Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
The law requires electrical equipment to be maintained so that it is safe. In-service inspection and testing is the normal way employers and landlords demonstrate they have done that, which is why insurers and clients so often ask to see the records.
-
Can you carry out remedial work from another contractor’s report?
Yes. If an EICR, survey or insurer has flagged items, we can price the remedial work, carry it out and certify it. You do not need to have had the original report from us.
-
Will the power need to go off for testing?
Parts of the testing require circuits to be isolated, so there will be interruptions. We plan those around how the property or site is used, including out of hours for commercial and industrial work.
Out of hours
Emergencies
What counts as urgent, what to do first, and how to reach us at 3am.
-
What counts as an electrical emergency?
Anything unsafe, or anything that stops a property or site functioning: total loss of power, a board that will not stay on, a burning smell, scorching at a socket or switch, exposed conductors, or water damage to wiring. If you are in any doubt, isolate what you safely can and call.
-
Is the emergency line really answered at night?
07968 914685 is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The same number takes WhatsApp messages if you would rather send photographs of the problem than describe it.
-
What should I do before you arrive?
If it is safe to do so, switch off at the consumer unit or isolator and keep people away from the area. Do not open equipment, and do not keep resetting a device that trips straight back out — it is tripping for a reason.
-
Do you cover businesses and industrial sites out of hours?
Yes — homes, commercial premises and industrial sites alike. On sites we already hold a service contract for, knowing the installation usually means we find the fault faster.
-
Will an emergency repair be certified?
A callout often starts with making things safe, which is the immediate priority. Any permanent repair or replacement that follows is tested and certified to the 18th Edition exactly as it would be on a planned job.
