Distribution board being inspected during electrical fault finding in Northamptonshire

Electrical fault finding in Wellingborough

Tripping breakers, dead circuits and faults that come and go — traced properly, explained plainly and put right.

Fault Finding

Protection trips for a reason

An RCD that keeps going, a breaker that will not stay in, a circuit that dies when it rains — those are not faults with the protective device. They are the device doing its job, telling you something further down the circuit is wrong.

Fault finding is a process of elimination: isolating circuits, testing insulation resistance, splitting the installation down and narrowing the problem to the accessory, cable or appliance actually causing it. Guesswork gets expensive quickly; testing does not.

We do this for homes, commercial premises and industrial sites across Northamptonshire, on installations we have never seen before as often as ones we wired ourselves.

Scope of work

Faults we trace

The symptoms people call us about, and what is usually behind them.

  • Tripping RCDs & breakers

Nuisance tripping narrowed to the circuit, accessory or appliance causing it.

  • Dead circuits

Sockets or lights with no supply, traced back through the circuit to the break.

  • Intermittent faults

The ones that only happen sometimes — damp, heat, vibration or a loose connection.

  • Burning smells & heat

Scorching or heat at a socket, switch or board. Isolate it and call us the same day.

  • Water & storm damage

Leaks and flooding into wiring, tested for insulation resistance before re-energising.

  • Machine & plant faults

Three-phase supplies, isolators and controls on industrial sites.

  • Post-EICR investigation

Further investigation items on a condition report, chased down and resolved.

  • Repairs & certification

Once the fault is found we put it right and certify the work, not just diagnose it.

Common questions

Your questions, answered

The questions we are asked most about fault finding work. If yours isn't here, just ask — we don't charge for straight answers.

Still unsure? Speak to an electrician 01933 674 191
  • My RCD keeps tripping — can I just keep resetting it?

Resetting it once is reasonable. Repeatedly is not. The device is operating because it has detected a fault, and resetting it over and over leaves whatever caused it still there. If it will not stay in, leave it off and call us.

  • How do you find an intermittent fault?

By testing rather than waiting for it to happen again. Insulation resistance and continuity testing across the circuits will usually show a fault that is present but not yet severe enough to trip, and the conditions it appears in — damp, heat, load — narrow it further.

  • Can you find a fault someone else has given up on?

Often, yes. A fault that has defeated someone usually means the obvious things have been eliminated, which is a head start. With more than 35 years behind us there is not much we have not come across.

  • Will you fix it on the same visit?

Where the repair is straightforward and we have the parts, yes. Where it turns out to be something larger — a failed cable under a floor, for example — we will make it safe, explain the options and price the repair properly rather than rushing it.

  • Is there a charge if you cannot find the fault?

Talk to us before we come out and we will be clear about how the visit is charged. What we will not do is keep replacing parts and billing for them in the hope that the symptom goes away.

  • Something smells like it is burning — what should I do?

Switch off at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so, keep people away from the area, and call the emergency line. Do not wait for office hours and do not re-energise it to see if it happens again.
