PAT Testing

Proving the kit is safe to use

PAT testing is the in-service inspection and testing of the appliances that plug in — kettles, computers, power tools, till equipment, extension leads and everything else that has accumulated in a building over the years.

The point is not the sticker. It is being able to show that the equipment people use has been checked, and catching the damaged lead or failing appliance before it causes a problem.

We carry out PAT testing for offices, shops, industrial premises and landlords across Northamptonshire, with results documented item by item so you have a record that stands up.

Common questions

Your questions, answered

The questions we are asked most about pat testing work. If yours isn't here, just ask — we don't charge for straight answers.

  • How often does equipment need PAT testing?

There is no single fixed interval in law. The requirement is to maintain equipment so it is safe, and the sensible testing frequency depends on the type of equipment and how hard it is used — a construction site transformer and an office printer are not the same risk. We will give you a straight recommendation for your equipment.

  • Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

The law requires electrical equipment to be maintained in a safe condition. In-service inspection and testing is the normal way employers and landlords demonstrate they have done that, which is why insurers and clients so often ask for the records.

  • Will it disrupt the working day?

Not much. Each item is out of use only briefly, and we arrange testing around how the premises runs — out of hours or department by department where that is easier.

  • What records do we get?

Documented results item by item, so you can evidence what was tested, when, and what the outcome was — rather than just a pass rate for the building.

  • What happens if something fails?

It is clearly flagged and taken out of use. Where a failure is something simple like a damaged lead or plug, we can often put it right there and then; where it is not, you get a clear record of what needs replacing.
